Associate Instructor's Seminar: 2013
Attended Associate Instructor's weekend. I had a lot of good things to say about this weekend. Pamana Tuhon is giving us the information on the Royal Guard techniques. Techniques were taught by his sons. We were also taught by Tuhon Pat on adding the karambit with the royal guard. It was also good to spend some time with other people in the tribe. Looking forward to the upcoming Sama Sama 2014. I heard it's going to be in California.

Tonight's class was led by Guro Bob. He had us split into pairs working on specific Transitional Drills. I was paired up with Alex (he's been here about 8-12 months). We worked TD's up to 7. He needed some help with TD's 4 and 5. After we got that down, I taught him TD 7. He picked up both Feeder and Receiver side's. Later, Guro Joe M. did some reps with him.
Guro Bob said he'll be leaving this weekend for Sama Sama in Europe. We wish him safe travels and can't wait until he comes back to share new material with us.

We had a visitor from Oregon that trained with us in Maryland. Warren Dabney used to train with us long time ago but moved up to Buffalo, NY and now to Portland, Or. In this class, we reviewed transitional drills and templates. We went over TD 1-5 and taught TD 6 to Warren. Later we reviewed template 4 of 12.
It was a good class to review curriculum. Sama Sama is coming up and I'm sure the members and instructors going will be excited. I heard some empty hand curriculum will be taught. I wished I was going, but will have to go next time. Wishing all my friends there to have fun and learn a lot. I'll be asking you plenty of questions when you get back.

Worked more on TD5 so Bryant could get used to that drill. More reps but with correct responses makes a good drill. Next time he trains we will try to tighten up the drill. I should try experimenting on the Receiver responses and isolate the moves where the Receiver hits back. I think that would make for some good training.

Guro Joe M. went over Atienza Kali Bolo Evolution 1: two man drill. Some of the guys used smak stix to see how certain parts of the drill would feel. For example, the two count for Feeder 1 or the intercept for Feeder 2. Later in the class, one of the other students wanted to go over Transitional Drills with me. We went up to TD7.

Guro Bob Shin went over more stick grappling techniques. This time the Feeder didn't have a stick and entered into a over-under clinch. It starts off with Receiver attacking with angles 1 & 2. Feeder comes in with a roof like shield so the blow glances off the forearm. Then, Feeder goes into the over-under clinch.
Receiver places the stick between them in order to create space. Feeder takes hold of the stick and pushes it over and behind Receiver's head. Feeder quickly jerks stick down with the opposite hand. In that sequence, the Feeder's hand reaches under Receiver's arm (like an americana) and takes hold of the stick to pull down and out of Receiver's hands.
After Feeder disarms Receiver, Feeder can either continue to finish in the clinch or separate to hit and finish.
Later, I went through Transitional Drills with Guro Joe Marana. I had to slow down when glowing through TD 6 & 10. Maybe next time it will be smoother. It was a good night.
On a side note, I wanted to mention Guro Joe's group. He is also an Atienza and Inosanto Kali instructor. He teaches up in Baltimore, Md.

Stick-Grappling @ Maharlika Martial Arts: March 19, 2013
On this night, Guro Bob went over Tuhon Tom's material for stick-grappling. I was excited to go over the material. They started last week which I wasn't able to make, but we reviewed the techniques in the beginning of class.
Techniques done last week (probably not the official terms):
• standing side control/clinch to neck smash
• standing side control/clinch to ribs grinding
• standing side control/clinch to Pez takedown
• standing side control/clinch to rear choke and if Receiver ducks out of side control--hold down head and strike.
Techniques done tonight:
• standing side control/clinch to thigh grind until Receiver falls to the ground--once on the ground, hit legs and ankles. At first, I started aiming for the head, but Guro Bob suggested to hit the legs because the Receiver has a better chance of grabbing the stick. If Receiver gets up again, close gap and place R in standing side control.
• standing side control/clinch to thigh grind--Receiver counters by pulling the stick up. Feeder quickly brings the stick up to the armpit. F reaches up and over with Lh to perform cop-lock. R counters and gets out of cop-lock. F flows from cop-lock to throat crush.
Some other techniques to perform if R tries to get arm out of standing side control/clinch: release hold of stick with Rh and reposition hold.
Near the end of class, I reviewed TDs 1-10 with Guro Joe Marana.
Next week, going over stick-grappling from the clinch.

Maharlika Martial Arts Class: March 5, 2013
In tonight's class, Guro Bob had us review transitional drill 6. Guro's Joe Marana, Joe Cypressi and I were reviewing and refining the drill. We learned that many of the Feeder's moves comprised of Guard 5 (empty hand) material. For instance in TD6, the Feeder catches the Receiver's kick. Then, Feeder waits right as the Receiver plants that same foot to land and kicks it. It should look like the Feeder is kicking Receiver's leg from underneath him before he plants it.
We had a good class. Next week, Guro Bob said we'd work with some stick grappling material. Sounds like fun!

Tonight's class we had split the class into two groups. Guro Joe C. taught TD6 and I taught 3 of 9. I went through different variations after having them go through 3 of 9 w/tapping. They tried left hand mirrors right hand template. After that, they tried picking 3 shots from 3 of 9 and making it flow in an attack. Receiver had to correctly cross-tap each shot. Later, taught left hand defeats right hand template.
Guro Joe Marana also showed me and Joe C. some cool 3 of 9 empty hand feeder techniques.
1. palm down ridge hand to neck or hammer first to right temple
2. ridge hand to left side neck
3. hammer fist to left side stomach or hook to floating ribs
4. elbow or hammer fist down to sternum
5. upper cut to stomach/groin or kick up to groin
6. (maybe) left cross or backfist
7. kick or knee to left leg
8. right hook to rib
9. finger thrust to throat or elbow to head

Tactical Casualty Care Seminar: Feb 3, 2012
I was able to attend a seminar on trauma care hosted by my instructors Guro's Bob Shin and Victor Wong. We didn't have a lot of people come out, but I think that benefitted the group. I liked the video's and pictures that went along with the lecture. It made it more dramatic and got the point across.
The person who presented this information has plenty of experience. Chris Van Houten is a National Registered Critical Care Paramedic with over 20 years of EMS experience in NYC. Nationally, he is the Region One Faculty for the Tactical Combat Casualty Care program which is accredited by the American College of Surgeons. He delivers medical training to Local and Federal High Risk Law Enforcement teams, members of every branch of the US Armed Forces and develops custom tactical medical programs for multiple federal agencies.
A few pointers that I got out the seminar were learning about our goals in a location where violence is still going on or had happened. First, complete the mission or the neutralizing the threat. Next, treat the casualty. and then prevent additional casualties by assessing other risk.
We also learned about the importance of turniquet's. It's used when massive bleeding occurs from one of the limbs because of trauma like a gunshot wound or a stab/slash of an artery.
I liked the seminar, because we had a scenario that we went through at the end. We had to go in and save two down victims. We had to assess, treat, and then evacuate. I wish we had more time to go through another scenario. Hopefully next time we can get more scenarios to try.

The weather in Maryland is really weird these days. One week it's in the 50's and this week it's in the 20's. It's probably going to get warmer next week. Oh well, back to class notes.
We reviewed Transitional Drills. Guro Bob split us in two groups. I got to train with Guro Joe C., Kapitid David, and later Guro Joe Marana. We started with TD7 to TD10. It's been awhile since we reviewed TD's. I was a little rusty on TD7 and TD10. In all, it was a good time. I got some reps in with the higher TD's.
